ABOUT KOALA ADVOCACY

Koala Advocacy is a new initiative with the aim of supporting & defending koalas and their habitat throughout Australia against all threats, both natural & those caused by human society.

  • Speaking up for the protection of koalas & their habitat
  • Promoting best practice for koala conservation strategy
  • Providing connection for koala rescue, care & support groups

Koalas are under threat

Whether it's native forest logging in north east NSW, loss of habitat through urban development in Sydney & Brisbane, harvesting of blue gum plantations in Victoria or Kangaroo Island in South Australia, or destruction of koala habitat for expanding agricultural lands, mining or wind farm projects, the continual fragmentation and loss of koala habitat poses the most serious threat to koala populations across the country.

Koalas face other threats including devastating loss from bushfires & drought, injury or death from being hit by cars & trucks on the roads that we build through koala habitat, dieback of trees & forests, destruction of wildlife corridors that link between larger habitat areas, predation by dogs in urban landscaps, and the ubiquitous threat posed by diseases such as Chlamydia & Koala Retrovirus.

Government must do more to protect koalas & their habitat

The major problem of habitat loss is compounded by the fact that the three levels of government in Australia (Federal, State & Local Councils) all regularly approve the destruction of koala habitat, when they are fully aware that fragmentation and loss of habitat causes the most serious decline of koala populations.

It therefore stands to reason, that the most serious threat facing koalas, is also the one which could most easily be fixed, if our government was willing.

Support Koala Groups

There are many individual koala groups for local areas (eg Sydney or Port Stephens, or Brisbane, or Portland in Victoria, or Kangaroo Island in South Australia), and many wonderful koala rescue, care & support groups dotted around the country, who are doing fantastic work to save koalas.

Koala Advocacy wants to provide more information on these groups to help you find a group in your local area, and to help these groups when they have a pressing need for support on particular issues.

We're always stronger when we stand together in unity, and Koala Advocacy wants to provide a meeting place for you to connect with the many wonderful koala resuce, care & support organisations throughout Australia.

Please advocate with us

Please join with Koala Advocacy in our efforts to conserve koalas & their homes in our eucalypt forests, throughout Australia.

Remember that you're not powerless, but we all have a vital role to play in saving Australia's koalas.

Meet with your MP

Koala Advocacy plans to provide training on how to meet face to face with your local MP to speak up & advocate for koalas.

Members of Parliament are elected to represent their constituents, and you have a right to meet with your MP, and ask them to represent you and your views on important subjects such as the treatment of koalas. You can ask your MP to meet with the Environment Minister to put forward your views on protecting koalas & their habitat.

Koala Advocacy will provide training on how you can do more to raise your voice to advocate for koala protection & conservation. Remember that we're stronger when we stand together & speak with a unified voice.

Please step up with us on this important journey towards saving our much loved koalas into the future.
